Closterium dianae

Cells of Closterium dianae are remarkably evenly curved and in the mid-region of the ventral side often a little bit inflated ('belly'). An essential characteristic is the shape of the apex: obliquely truncate with a distinct end-pore. Based on size and slenderness of the cells several varieties have been described. Zygospores are globose and smooth-walled. In the Netherlands, Closterium dianae is of rather common occurrence in various mesotrophic pools. Zygospores were encountered but a few times.
