Staurastrum habeebense, recent find in the Netherlands.

In January 2004 Staurastrum habeebense was desmid of the month on this site. This species is only known from Canada, Great Britain and Slovakia. It was expected that St. habeebense is not that rare and probably could be found on more locations when looked for in suitable habitats. Therefore, some members of the Dutch desmidclub took samples on less usual places and with success! On January the 9th, 2005, St. habeebense was found at the village of Huizen,in a shallow rain pool on weathered concrete whithout any protection from the elements. Most specimens were infested by mould spores.
